I completely agree. I was just telling c4chaos the other day that I think one of the things that seems to be missing in integral circles is a more concrete discussion of spiritual practice. It seems to be very vague generalizations. Is it that the...

Quantify-ing Happy-ness???

“Character is the basis of happiness and happiness the sanction of character.” -- George Santayana

Staying healthy and happy is a struggle for about half of Americans, according to a massive survey that attempts to measure the nation's general welfare, much like the Dow Jones Industrial Average portrays the health of the stock market. "There's never been anything quite like it," said Daniel Kahneman, a Nobel Prize winner in economic sciences. "You're getting detai… Continue

The Art of Dharma

“The art of dharma practice requires commitment, technical accomplishment, and imagination. As with all arts, we will fail to realize its full potential if any of these three are lacking. The raw material of dharma practice is ourself and our world, which are to be understood and transformed according to the vision and values of the dharma itself. This is not a process of self- or world-transcendence, but one of self- and world-creation.

I don't know. I think our evolution has to occur mostly on the individual level. When we try to redesign our social, political and economic systems, we are basically trying to minimize the extent to which the flaws of the individual manifest in the larger system. This is not stable or adaptive, it is a temporary solution to the symptoms of a disease that runs very deep. The systems do need continual reassesment in order for our species to survive until this radical individual transformation occurs on a large enough scale, but our focus should be on the individual.

I think that a very basic problem is that our inherent fear of death and desire to reproduce have extended to a new concept of self. Our self concept now includes a lot of higher constructs that were totally irrelevant in our evolutionary history. We are identified with our thoughts, feelings, ideas, places, things, peers... and we always want to add more of these objects to our self concept in order to bring a greater sense of security. The fear of loss is an extension of the fear of death. The desire for more might be an extension of the desire to reproduce. Consumerism is an obvious expression of this and is clearly having a huge environmental impact.

I think my diagnosis is incomplete and possibly wrong in some ways. Whatever the correct diagnosis, I think it needs to be made obvious to a lot of people in order for us to heal. What do you think?

hey punk

thanks for the invite and comment

thinly-spread us integral dharma dudes huh?

so many technologies and platforms and not enough cohesion and standards... I'm looking forward to Integral Life and Integral Europe and hope they can get some glue going

that said... small indie off-shoots like this are great for creating new freaky kosmic grooves that no one else is making yet

like the style of this place...

what now?

I won't abandon anyone. I have plenty of love to spread around. This place is a favorite of mine. I visit here on a regular basis even when I don't reply to anything. I haven't been in much of a mood to start discussions lately, but maybe that will change.

I've also been busy lately. My brother here in town just had another kid and I've been visiting with him. Then this weekend my mom is coming for a week or so. As always, real life trumps internet. I'm sure you know the truth of that even better than I.
